The Panther tank – a German beast in Wola
In 1944, Panther-type tanks (PzKpfw V) formed the backbone of Germany’s armored forces. These were modern machines, fitted with thick, sloped armor and a powerful gun, designed to dominate open battlefields. However, on August 2, 1944, when units of the 27th Panzer Regiment of the 19th Panzer Division drove into the narrow streets of Warsaw’s Wola district, their technological advantage diminished.
In the area of Okopowa and Mireckiego Streets, overconfident Germans drove into an ambush. A column consisting of 3 tanks and 1 armored car was attacked by Polish units. The insurgents, using anti-tank grenades and gasoline bottles, managed to disable the vehicles. The German crews, fired on with machine-gun fire, fled or were killed. Both tanks fell into the insurgents’ hands. Most importantly, one of them was fully operational.
Capture and the combat debut of “Pudel”
The insurgents quickly manned their prize. The tank’s engine was running, and mechanics managed to get the machine moving. The vehicle was given the name “Pudel” in honor of the fallen commander, 2nd Lt. Tadeusz Tyczyński. On the German Zimmerit-type camouflage, insurgent markings and the name were painted: the scouting fleur-de-lis and a white-and-red checkerboard. Thus was born the insurgent armored platoon under the command of Lt. Wacław Micuta “Wacek”.
“Pudel” was not just a symbol. It became crucial fire support.
-
On August 5 the tank took part in the attack on the “Gęsiówka” concentration camp. Precise shots from the gun shattered the gate and guard towers, enabling the soldiers of “Zośka” to free 348 Jews from all over Europe.
-
It supported the fighting for the Calvinist and Evangelical cemeteries.
-
It destroyed German machine-gun nests placed on the tower of St. Augustine’s Church and the tower of St. Charles Borromeo Church.
The machine fought until its batteries and ammunition ran out. Around August 10 or 11, in the Old Town, the damaged and immobilized tank (standing at that time in front of the Pfeiffer factory) was set on fire by its own crew so it would not fall into enemy hands.
The Panther in World of Tanks – a digital history lesson
The legend of “Pudel” was immortalized in one of the world’s most popular MMO games. In World of Tanks, the insurgent version of the Panther (Tier VI) is more than just an ordinary premium vehicle. The game’s creators carefully recreated the historical paintwork, including the distinctive anchors of Fighting Poland.
For players around the world, “Pudel” in WoT is a carrier of knowledge. By playing this vehicle, they learn about the Warsaw Uprising, about the “Zośka” Battalion, and about how Poles were able to capture and use enemy equipment. It’s an interactive history lesson that reaches places textbooks do not.
Build your own history – modeling and remembrance
The memory of “Pudel” can be nurtured not only on a screen, but also at home by building a replica of this remarkable vehicle. Modeling is an excellent way to understand the machine’s design and pay tribute to its crew.
A special offering for enthusiasts of history and military technology is the brick set Reobrix 77034 Panther Tank “Pudel”. It is an official licensed product of World of Tanks, combining play with historical education.
Why is this model special?
